The long awaited Hummer is back but not as we last saw it. The last Hummer, the H3, was based on the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. The original Hummer H1 was a street version of a military vehicle but it didn’t quite work on city streets. This new Hummer is not only better proportioned for city roads but it is in tune with the times as it is the first full electric GMC vehicle.
The all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV rides on GM’s new Ultium Drive architecture which allows the Hummer EV to have a 24-module, double-stacked Ultium battery capable of providing up to 560+km of range. The battery can be recharged from a 350 kW DC fast charger which would allow the Hummer EV to recharge at a rate of around 160 km of range in just 10 minutes.
The battery sends the power to all four wheels via three electrical motors. The combined output of the motors is 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of wheel torque. Motor torque is closer to 1,400 lb-ft. Each wheel is wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires and each wheel can also turn. The GMC Hummer EV has four-wheel steering for greater maneuverability along with a new “Crab Walk” feature which allows the truck to move diagonally across rough terrain.
Speaking of rough terrain, the underbody is protected by steel plates strategically placed to protect the battery pack. As well, the Hummer EV is equipped with air suspension that can raise the truck by 6-inches when going off the beaten path. Other off-road goodies include UltraVision which front and rear underbody cameras to help drivers navigate obstacles.
Back on the paved road, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be a comfortable cruiser. It will be available with Cadillac’s SuperCruise semi-autonomous system which offers hands-free driving on highways. It also has different drives modes for different conditions. The most potent drive mode is the “Watts to Freedom” mode which unleashes the full acceleration capability of the Hummer EV. 0-60 mph (96 km/h) gets over and done with in just 3 seconds.

On the inside, the Hummer EV exudes modernism with a 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display. While most of the vehicle’s functions are controlled through the touchscreen, there are physical buttons for more common features like climate control or locking differentials. It will also be a very roomy cabin. Not only does the GMC Hummer EV offer a lot of space but the Infinity Roof with removable Sky Panels will let you and your friends enjoy the open outdoors from inside the truck.
Segwaying into the back, GMC has not revealed specs of the bed size but it will include GMC’s MultiPro tailgate with six different functions which range from a step to a workbench. The rear window is a power drop window and there will be a power tonneau cover.
The 2022 Hummer EV will be available in Fall of 2021 with a starting price of $112,595 USD for the Edition 1. After which a Hummer 3X, 2X, and 2 will follow. The 3X will arrive in Fall of 2022 with a price of $99,995 USD, the 2X in Spring 2023 with an $89,995 USD price tag and finally the EV2 will arrive in Spring 2024 with a price tag of $79,995 USD. Each version of the Hummer EV will have subsequently less power and range than the Edition 1 with the “base” EV2 Hummer having “just” 625 hp and a 400+km range.
